Why Are Major Banks Funding "Climate Bombs"?
According to a recent article in the Guardian, in 2022 banks including JPMorgan Chase, Citi, and Bank of America allocated over $150 billion to 425 projects, each of which is expected to add a gigaton of release a gigaton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. According to recent estimates, in order to keep global heating within the best case range of 1.5C,we can release no more than 250 gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But the estimated carbon dioxide output from the "climate bomb" projects is almost double that amount, leading to the conclusion that we currently have no viable plan to meet our climate goals.
